You are receiving this e-mail because throughout the last year you have in some way or another supported our family while our son, PFC Nathan Whaley has been deployed to Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. It is my immense pleasure to report that we have received confirmation that Nathan has returned safely to the 173rd home base in Italy. He served with the scout platoon of the 1-503 Airborne Infantry Battalion as a radio operator and 203 gunner. He participated in numerous combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and will receive his Combat Infantry Badge. We could not be any prouder of him or his mates.
Our joy is tempered, however, by the knowledge that several soldiers who left with my son and the 173rd paid the ultimate price for freedom and now stand the eternal watch. May they be welcomed into the Great Hall and their families be granted God’s peace in their time of grief. We all owe them more than can ever be repaid.
