For the few revolver enthusiasts around these days there are not many options for learning how to shoot a wheel gun. Seeking the best possible training for the revolver I signed up for a one-day private lesson. The instructor was Jerry McCown. Despite having had 41 days of training on all sorts of platforms in the last 40 months I asked Jerry to start me from scratch on the revolver. After we got past things that I did know – this is a hammer, this is a trigger – I came to the realization that I didn’t know how much I didn’t know and was energized to be starting from zero. Shooting started with the fundamentals of presentation, trigger control, loading, and then speed loading. I was clunky in the morning however by the end of the day I could tell that my skills had significantly improved with the ability to get good headshots on two simultaneous moving targets at 7 yards. Overall the day was an amazing journey of learning how to shoot all over again and the trigger control skills will elevate my capabilities on all shooting platforms. Jerry is a true artist of the revolver and master of instruction. I’ll have to practice what I learned and do this again next year.
