I attended Gunsite’s Nashville Simulator class at Royal Range July 24 – 26. I understand it was the first of its kind. This was an exceptional class – which is not only my assessment – but that of each of my classmates. I have taken many handgun classes many times, including close-quarters defense, active shooter, and vehicle defense. The tactics behind decision-making in those classes has been of great value, but never really put to the test. In the Nashville Simulator class several unique situations occurred. We ran shoot house scenarios, had a meaningful debrief, and then repeated the same scenario. Forearmed with the situation and the debrief, we were was able to apply – and thus reinforce – improved decision-making and technique. With multiple simunition (force-on-force) opportunities following the shoot house scenarios, we were able to apply our newly honed techniques, decision-making, and marksmanship. The debriefs were extensive and thought-provoking. We had the opportunity to watch fellow students from a catwalk. Again – invaluable. Being able to watch other students itself was a tremendous learning opportunity. Two students were “killed” defending his home rather than his life. Not only was that eye-opening for those two students, we watching saw clearly how decision-making is key. Having fire returned sharpens our training to “shoot until the threat is gone,” use cover or concealment, and get out of the danger zone. What down time (not in a simulator run) we had was spent shooting and moving, to sharpen us for the shoot house runs. Multiple scenarios, thorough debriefs, discussions of tactics with the chance to re-run the scenario provided a unique experience unlike any other class I have attended. This was an exciting and extremely important class. I hope it will be offered two or three times a year. I would also add that Ron Fielder is and remains a great range master. Jeff Dooley is likewise an exceptional instructor and coach. He has the tactics and the skill and can teach it to others! I appreciate all that you and the instructors at Gunsite offer!
