I just had to write a little bit about a great course I just finished. On March 17, 2017, I completed the Gunsite 250 Defensive Pistol class at Colonial Shooting Academy in Richmond, VA. What a class! Five (5) days filled with instruction and shooting on a variety of topics. Lot's of shooting to reinforce the topics. We covered reloads (tactical and speed), malfunctions (all types with practical exercises), shooting drills for score, the El Presidente drill, the failure drill, low light, no light, kneeling (one knee, both knees, supported knee), cornering or pieing, mindset for winning, equipment ideas, gear placement and arrangement for EDC, and an introduction to a shoot house. Throughout the week the Gunsite Instructors were constantly reinforcing the mindset to follow through, do the required reload, and scan the area. I thought that the shoot house was intense and very fun at the same time, and lots of learning was had by myself and others. All of this training came together with scored runs in a shoot house scenario, and shooting drills on the final day. We also had some fun with a little competitive shoot-off on some steel targets. One of the points I really liked about this week was that there was plenty of shooting practice with oversight by an Instructor to provide learning opportunities. The Gunsite Instructors; Ron, Joe, and Dave, were nothing but Professional! Great personalities to facilitate learning a lot of material in a short amount of time. And they were completely engaged in safety; teaching and reinforcing muzzle discipline at all times. It is worth the money. I got the training that I have been searching for and I got plenty of practice shooting time! Now I feel like I have the foundation to develop my personal dry fire training to maintain and improve my skills. If you get the chance, take the course and learn more about yourself and your firearm. And as a final note, the Colonial Shooting Academy is, without a doubt, the finest indoor range I have had the opportunity to shoot at!
