Are you ready when the fight comes to your community?

It appears that Garland Texas was exercising their God given rights to express themselves when alleged Jihadists “took offense” and appeared with rifles and other weapons and equipment to stop the exercise of Constitutional Rights.  Fortunately, Garland was prepared and took the fight to the miscreants.  While an unarmed security guard was injured, a police officer returned fire with his pistol and stopped the thugs in their tracks.  The best art displayed at this art event was the chalk outline of the evil-doers bodies.

Once again, are you ready when the fight comes to your community?

While we cheer the outcome of this attempt of murder of our citizens, we also need to learn from it.  The evil will come to us.  It is not “if,” but “when.”  When it does come, do you and your family have a plan? Have you thought about mass gatherings?  (“Gun Free Zones”)  Remember that mass gatherings include the shopping mall, Wal-Mart, the grocery, the local schools . . . . . .  What planning have you done with your family and friends?  What to do, how to react, where to go, how to communicate.  What can I have as a weapon in a “safe gun free zone?”  (Not trying to sell merchandise, but I just traveled several thousand miles involving Customs, TSA, cruise line security and multiple metal detectors.  My DeSantis City Slicker Coin Purse went with me to all places and venues.  It reminded me of a tool the “old coppers” carried in my younger days as a Deputy.  I had a plan  . . . .)

Coming from the Midwest, we had tornado drills.  As Gunsite Grad and friend Col. Dave Grossman (Ret.) points out in his lectures about school fire drills and pre-planning no student had died in a school fire in many years.  Do you have earthquake drills where you live?  You need to have that serious discussion with your family and friends and co-workers about what you can do when “it” happens.  Don’t be the sheep and bleat (nay, bleed) in the pasture.  Be the sheepdog and the Boy Scout and “Be Prepared.”

Congratulations to the Officer and the Police of Garland Texas and the good citizens that support them.  That was a job well done.

Now let’s get on with the rest of this month’s business.

Mother’s Day is May 10.  (Also Jeff Cooper’s birthday!)  Has your Mom been to a Ladies’ Pistol Class?  What better gift for Mom?  She was the woman who wiped your soiled bottom, snotty nose, dirt and tears?  Many say to give Mom a nice bottle of wine since you were the one to drive her to drink, but we think training would be better.  I was the Rangemaster for a class a few years ago when Mom and Daughter attended.  Mom was the class favorite and her certificate had “Grambo” on it.  What a great life experience for them.

Look for an article by Tim Lynch in the May issues of American Shooting Journal entitled:  “Jeff Cooper Saved Your Life.”  Tim states “In order to digest this sweeping statement you have to understand how things were before Lieutenant Col. Jeff Cooper, USMC developed the “modern techniques” of small arms training and opened the Gunsite Training facility in Paulden, AZ.”  The article is quite a thorough account of the history behind Gunsite’s founder Jeff Cooper and a very good read.

There are 250, 350, 223, Scout Rifle (Advanced), Defensive 3 Gun, Defensive Vehicle Tactics, CQP, numerous tutorials and more this month.  Our friends with the Outdoor Channel and Gun Stories with Joe Montegna were back last week.  Whew . . . .

While we are speaking of classes, let us introduce the first “Gunsite Special of the Month.”  Every month or so, we will present a “Special of the Month” class and offer a discount on a specialty class.  This month, it is Defensive Vehicle Tactics May 25-29.  (Current enrollees will receive a credit in the Pro Shop!)  Sign up now as there are seven seats left!

As this is the first month of the “special” we will also offer ½ off the tuition of the Edged Weapons Class if you add it to your May CQP or 223 Course.

Finally we must remember Memorial Day on May 25.  It is far more than just a day off work or the Indy 500.  It was formerly known as Decoration Day after the Civil War to honor the war dead.  However, it has been extended to honor all Americans who gave the supreme sacrifice while in military service.  Take time to honor those who gave their lives (and their families) so that we can continue to exercise our rights in our great Republic.  Remember to fly Old Glory every day, but especially on this honored day.
