It’s 0430 hrs on Sunday morning after the GAS match I am moved to send you some thoughts about this past week. You opened my 350 class by saying that Gunsite’s strengths come from its instructors. I didn’t fully understand the weight of that statement until the week had passed. These are some thoughts. Joe Knapp has a “ command presence “ that examples leadership , caliber, and character that is rarely found today. It is obvious as soon as he begins to speak and in the way he carries himself. Jeff Dooley demonstrates not only a wealth of knowledge, but a genuine desire to present that knowledge in a manner that every student in the class can benefit from it regardless of their skill level. Ron Fielder has a passion in his work that can’t be taught. He uses that passion to express the importance of “getting it right “ and not just going through the motions. I don’t think mediocrity is in Ron’s vocabulary. Verlin Rector motivates and inspires you to move forward. He has a unique ability to put pressure on you in a “kind “ way. You don’t realize he’s doing that until your heart is suddenly pounding and you’re reminding yourself to breath. I have often said that life is not about what you have, but is instead about what you get to do, and who you get to interact with. My life is fuller and richer because of my experience here at Gunsite. I will be forever grateful to these men I have named for that experience. I believe that the most influence you will ever have on a person will come at a time when you you don’t realize that you’re having any influence at all. I was definitely influenced in a number of good ways this week. Sincerely,
David C., 350 Intermediate Pistol Class, October 2019, Gunsite, Paulden, AZ
