I have attended the 250 Pistol, 223 Carbine and Precision Rifle classes over the past several years. One of the most important lessons I learned had to do with mindset. I am 63 years old and weigh only 145 pounds, but I maintain my shooting skills. Last Christmas, I was shopping at a very upscale mall in Atlanta. I parked in the multi-level parking lot in the afternoon. I was carrying concealed my Kahr PM9 in a pocket holster in the front pocket of my cargo pants. As I returned to my car carrying a number of gifts, I consciously was in condition yellow and made sure all gifts were carried in my left hand; leaving my right hand and arm free (I am right handed). As I went up the narrow stairs to my parking level a young black man wearing his cap sideways came down the stairs quickly toward me, at the same time another young black man, wearing a similar cap, started up the stairs in my direction. I was effectively boxed in due to the stair design. The one above me asked if I had "72 cents" he could borrow. I immediately looked him directly in the eye and responded that "I cannot help you" and began to move my right hand down to my front pocket in an unhurried but confident fashion. I could tell from the looks on their faces that they instantly knew I was armed. They both turned around and disappeared like smoke. I am quite sure that if I had not been in condition orange and not been armed I would have been mugged. Thanks so much for all that you do.
